When Congress set up the latest series of allowable gambling they looked at FFl and decided two things; 30 million people in North America play FFl. Not wanting to hack these people off they decided it really was OK for folks like me and you and our buds to play FFL and if we had a few bucks in the pot to keep it interesting, that was great.

So they set up the rules to say it was OK to gamble on FFL if you had a season long league. In other words you and me and our friends could have a FFL and charge an entry fee and so much per transaction or loss. My league for instance (our 11th year) we charge $25, $5 per loss and $5 per transaction. We usually split up about 1200.00 a year for 12 guys.

Well, the gambling sites such as Fan Duel and Draft Kings are NOT season long leagues but one week leagues. This would seem to be a clear violation of the rules Congress laid out. Nevada has recognized this but for purely different reasons. They are NOT making money of the FFL and that means fewer dollars spent in their casinos which keep Nevada alive and well.

If you go to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association site they spend pages defending their legal status. So much so it seems that "the lady protest too much."

Now who is going to tell the NFL, which has teams which have invested in these companies, they cannot do it. Remember when Congress exempted the NFL from certain laws it gave the NFL the right to be a Non-profit. Yes, the NFL is a non profit. The key to that was Congress insisted there would be NO Saturday NFL to interfere with college games.

Now if all this seems ludicrous to you, then you now understand the dilemma the NFL is facing and along with Congress has a lot of red on it's face. brillprohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13132305906513192768noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5567401770023659304.post-2953070037323921292015-09-26T15:59:50.274-05:002015-09-26T15:59:50.274-05:00How could you publish a weekly sports blog and not...How could you publish a weekly sports blog and not mention Boston? I figured the Texans were getting better ratings this year and like you said they Chicago market is always there but much stronger when they are winning. I believe that is the first Sunday night football game I have watched in a month and I am a fan of neither team. It is hard to schedule so far ahead like they do and hope that things work out but sometimes they do. Hopefully for their sake it happens more often than not in the future and for everyone’s sake. Beyond that, looking at 12+ as a way of judging health of sports stations is and always has been inane. WCNN's doing quite well in Atlanta - they're likely to be on a real FM (as opposed to a 50 watt translator) by the end of the year.

In all your blather here, did it ever occur to you that something's different this year that has nothing to do with sports radio? The NFL had become a 12 month a year topic. The labor mess is radio death to discuss because fans don't understand (or care to) the issues, they just want their football. There's been a clear dropoff in interest for the draft, with none of the usual trade rumors or excitement from free agent signings to stoke interest. I suspect summer numbers will be stronger than usual once the NFL product, not labor issues, becomes viable as a discussion point again.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5567401770023659304.post-5809708333740930912011-04-20T17:51:30.406-05:002011-04-20T17:51:30.406-05:00low ratings are due to sports radio having turned ...low ratings are due to sports radio having turned into sports dork radio...insulting the listening audience, stringing the audience along for the whole show until they resolve the issue of the day..they lose the interest of the listener..there is plenty to talk about if you have the insight to investigate it rather than expect it to report itself..maybe blowhard radio is a better word for it..plus, radio is the theater of the mind and it has come face to face with the dumbing down of America...need i say more.??..Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03574076259580106074noreply@blogger.com
